حم ١

Ha Mim

وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ ٢

By the Clear Book,

إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ ٣

behold, We have made it an Arabic Koran; haply you will understand;

وَإِنَّهُ فِي أُمِّ الْكِتَابِ لَدَيْنَا لَعَلِيٌّ حَكِيمٌ ٤

and behold, it is in the Essence of the Book, with Us; sublime indeed, wise.

أَفَنَضْرِبُ عَنكُمُ الذِّكْرَ صَفْحًا أَن كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا مُّسْرِفِينَ ٥

Shall We turn away the Remembrance from you, for that you are a prodigal people?

وَكَمْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن نَّبِيٍّ فِي الْأَوَّلِينَ ٦

How many a Prophet We sent among the ancients,

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن نَّبِيٍّ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ٧

but not a Prophet came to them, without they mocked at him;

فَأَهْلَكْنَا أَشَدَّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ الْأَوَّلِينَ ٨

so We destroyed men stronger in valour than they, and the example of the ancients passed away.

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُم مَّنْ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ خَلَقَهُنَّ الْعَزِيزُ الْعَلِيمُ ٩

If thou askest them, ’Who created the heavens and earth?’ they will say, ’The All-mighty, the All-knowing created them.’

الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ مَهْدًا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ فِيهَا سُبُلًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ ١٠

He who appointed the earth to be a cradle for you, and appointed ways for you therein, that haply you may be guided;

وَالَّذِي نَزَّلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً بِقَدَرٍ فَأَنشَرْنَا بِهِ بَلْدَةً مَّيْتًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ تُخْرَجُونَ ١١

and who sent down out of heaven water in measure; and We revived thereby a land that was dead; even so you shall be brought forth;

وَالَّذِي خَلَقَ الْأَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ الْفُلْكِ وَالْأَنْعَامِ مَا تَرْكَبُونَ ١٢

and who created the pairs, all of them, and appointed for you ships and cattle such as you ride,

لِتَسْتَوُوا عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِ ثُمَّ تَذْكُرُوا نِعْمَةَ رَبِّكُمْ إِذَا اسْتَوَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ وَتَقُولُوا سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ ١٣

that you may be seated on their backs and then remember your Lord’s blessing when you are seated on them, and say, ’Glory be to Him, who has subjected this to us, and we ourselves were not equal to it;

وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ ١٤

surely unto our Lord we are turning.’

وَجَعَلُوا لَهُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ جُزْءًا ۚ إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَكَفُورٌ مُّبِينٌ ١٥

Yet they have assigned to Him a part of His own servants! Man is dearly unthankful.

أَمِ اتَّخَذَ مِمَّا يَخْلُقُ بَنَاتٍ وَأَصْفَاكُم بِالْبَنِينَ ١٦

Or has He taken to Himself, from that He creates, daughters, and favoured you with sons?

وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِمَا ضَرَبَ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ مَثَلًا ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُ مُسْوَدًّا وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ ١٧

And when any of them is given the good tidings of that he has likened to the All-merciful, his face is darkened, and he chokes inwardly.

أَوَمَن يُنَشَّأُ فِي الْحِلْيَةِ وَهُوَ فِي الْخِصَامِ غَيْرُ مُبِينٍ ١٨

What, one who is reared amid ornaments and, when the time of altercation comes, is not to be seen?

وَجَعَلُوا الْمَلَائِكَةَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ عِبَادُ الرَّحْمَٰنِ إِنَاثًا ۚ أَشَهِدُوا خَلْقَهُمْ ۚ سَتُكْتَبُ شَهَادَتُهُمْ وَيُسْأَلُونَ ١٩

And they have made the angels, who are themselves servants of the All-merciful, females. What, did they witness their creation? Their witness shall be written down, and they shall be questioned.

وَقَالُوا لَوْ شَاءَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ مَا عَبَدْنَاهُم ۗ مَّا لَهُم بِذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ ٢٠

They say, ’Had the All-merciful so willed, we would not have served them.’ They have no knowledge of that; they are only conjecturing.
