Jesus in Islam (ʿĪsā al-Masīḥ)

We love Jesus. We honor him. We follow his true message. And we do not worship him.

In Islam, Jesus is one of the greatest messengers of Allah — miraculously born, supported with signs, and sent to guide people back to worshipping the One God alone.

Who Jesus is in Islam

A messenger — honoured, loved, followed. Not an object of worship.

The Qur’an names Jesus with unusual specificity. He is not a minor figure in Islam — he is one of the greatest prophets ever sent. What Islam corrects is not his honour but the claim that he shares in God’s divinity.

QURAN
QURAN

“The Messiah [‘Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary), was no more than a Messenger;...”

The Messiah

The Qur’an calls him al-Masīḥ directly — this title is affirmed and honoured

Messenger of Allah

Sent specifically to the Children of Israel to restore true worship

Sign for humanity

His birth, his miracles, his message — all signs of Allah’s power

A servant of Allah

He says so himself from the cradle: "I am truly a servant of Allah" — Qur’an 19:30

A prophet

Given the Injīl, supported with revelation, made a prophet — Qur’an 19:30

Mary (Maryam): purity, honor, and a miracle

Islam does not treat Mary as a footnote. The Qur’an presents her as a model of devotion and chastity, and it tells her story in detail. The narrative in Sūrah Maryam shows her withdrawal, the angelic announcement, and the birth—then the moment people accuse her, and the infant Jesus speaks.

The angels said, ‘Mary, God gives you news of a Word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, who will be held in honour in this world and the next, who will be one of those brought near to God.

“He said: Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.”

The virgin birth: a sign, not a contradiction

We believe Jesus was born without a father — by Allah’s command alone. This is affirmed in the Qur’an without hesitation. But a miraculous birth does not make someone divine. The Qur’an makes the comparison directly:

Adam

Had neither father nor mother — created directly from clay by Allah’s command. No one worships Adam.

Jesus

Had no father — created in the womb by Allah’s command. The miracle is the same in kind.

“Indeed, the example of Jesus in the sight of Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust, then said to him: Be — and he was.”

Why Jesus is called "the Word" and "a spirit from Him"

Some people read Qur’anic titles for Jesus and assume they imply divinity. The same verse that gives these titles also explicitly denies divine sonship and warns against saying "Trinity." The titles must be read in context.

TITLE 01
“A Word from Him”

Points to Allah’s command — “Be” — by which Jesus was created, just as Allah creates all things. Reinforced by the Adam comparison: the same word created Adam. It is a title of origin, not of essence.

TITLE 02
“A Spirit from Him”

An honour and a description of origin by Allah’s command — not that Allah is divided into parts. The same verse rejects any "son of God" language and rejects Trinity. The title elevates Jesus; it does not elevate him to God.

“Do these titles mean Jesus is divine?”

No — and the Qur’an makes this explicit in the very verse that uses these titles. Qur’an 4:171 calls Jesus a messenger, a Word from Allah, and a spirit from Him — and in the same breath says: "do not say Trinity," "Allah is only one God," and "He is exalted above having a son." The titles describe the manner and honour of his creation. They do not describe his nature as divine.

People of the Book, do not go to excess in your religion, and do not say anything about God except the truth: the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was nothing more than a messenger of God, His word, directed to Mary, a spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers and do not speak of a ‘Trinity’- stop [this], that is better for you- God is only one God, He is far above having a son, everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him and He is the best one to trust.

The miracles of Jesus: real — by Allah’s permission

We affirm every miracle of Jesus. We do not attribute them to independent divinity. The Qur’an repeats a key phrase with each miracle: “by My will” / “by Allah’s permission.” This is deliberate — so nobody confuses miracles with Godhood.

Speaking as an infant — by Allah’s permission

Healing the blind and the leper — by Allah’s permission

Bringing the dead back to life — by Allah’s permission

Forming a bird from clay that becomes real — by Allah’s permission

Why the Qur’an phrases it this way

A miracle is a sign of Allah’s power — given to a prophet. It is never proof that the prophet is Allah. The miracle points to God. It does not transfer divinity to the one who performs it.

Then God will say, ‘Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favour to you and to your mother: how I strengthened you with the holy spirit, so that you spoke to people in your infancy and as a grown man; how I taught you the Scripture and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel; how, by My leave, you fashioned the shape of a bird out of clay, breathed into it, and it became, by My leave, a bird; how, by My leave, you healed the blind person and the leper; how, by My leave, you brought the dead back to life; how I restrained the Children of Israel from [harming] you when you brought them clear signs, and those of them who disbelieved said, “This is clearly nothing but sorcery”;

Crucifixion: what we believe happened

We do not believe Jesus was killed or crucified. Allah protected His messenger.

The Qur’an addresses the claim directly — not as a side note, but as a direct correction to what was reported and believed:

and said, ‘We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of God.’ (They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, though it was made to appear like that to them; those that disagreed about him are full of doubt, with no knowledge to follow, only supposition: they certainly did not kill him-

Allah raised Jesus to Himself. The story did not end there — and this connects directly to the belief in his return near the end of time.

The return of Jesus

We believe Jesus will return near the end of time

This is preserved in authentic hadith. Jesus will descend, rule with justice, and correct what has been distorted. His return is not a divine comeback — it is part of Allah’s plan, confirming truth and correcting falsehood.

The Prophet Mohammed ﷺ Said:

"The Hour Will Not Be Established Until The Son Of Mary (I.E. Jesus) Descends Amongst You As A Just Ruler, He Will Break The Cross, Kill The Pigs, And Abolish The Jizya Tax. Money Will Be In Abundance So That Nobody Will Accept It (As Charitable Gifts)."

01

Jesus returns as a servant of Allah — not as God incarnate

02

He comes as a just ruler — confirming truth and correcting falsehood

03

His return confirms the Islamic account — he never claimed divinity

04

It is part of Allah’s plan — not a divine intervention in the Greek sense

The Gospel (Injīl): what we affirm

We affirm that Allah revealed guidance to Jesus—called the Injīl.

We also recognize that later history involved translation, transmission, and theological development. That topic belongs on the next page (Bible vs. Qur’an) because it requires careful method and sourcing.

01

Revelation was given to Jesus. Allah sent him with guidance, and he carried it faithfully.

02

Jesus called people to worship Allah alone. That is what the revelation he carried said.

03

Later theological claims about Jesus’ divinity are not part of his original message. We don’t treat them as such.

The two extremes we reject

This balance is the heart of Islam’s view of Jesus

Error one — rejected

Dismissing Jesus

We don’t. We honour him as Messiah and messenger. His honour in Islam is immense.

“The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was no more than a messenger of Allah…”  — Qur’an 4:171

Error two — rejected

Worshipping Jesus

We don’t. Worship is for Allah alone — and Jesus himself says so, plainly.

“Worship Allah — my Lord and your Lord.” — Qur’an 5:72, Jesus speaking

Honour him as a noble messenger. Follow his true message. Worship the One God he called you to.
