Belief in divine decree (Qadar)
God knows what was, what is, and what will be, and nothing escapes His plan
Why did this happen to me? If God is in control, do my choices even count? You've probably carried these questions longer than you'd admit.
You do not have to switch off your mind to trust God
Divine Decree (Qadar) is not blind fate, but the relationship between an all-knowing, loving Creator and free, responsible humans—one of the most profound ideas in Islamic theology.
Belief in Qadar is essential in Islam, as one of the six pillars of faith alongside belief in God, His angels, scriptures, messengers, and the Last Day.
“Indeed, all things We created with predestination.”
“Indeed, all things We created with predestination.”
For those from Christian or Jewish backgrounds, this balance between God’s control and human responsibility may feel familiar.
“I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come.”
Isaiah 46:10 · NIV
“I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come.”
Isaiah 46:10 · NIVGod knows the end from the beginning — a conviction Islam shares completely.
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
Proverbs 16:9 · NIV
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
Proverbs 16:9 · NIVHuman planning is real — and so is God’s sovereignty over the outcome.
What is Qadar?
God's eternal knowledge, writing, will, and creation of all things — past, present, and future.
Qadar is the belief that nothing happens outside God's knowledge or beyond His will. Nothing surprises Him. Nothing is random. But — and this is where people often misunderstand — that does not mean you are a puppet. You choose. You are accountable. Both are true, and Islam holds both without cancelling either one.At the same time, human beings genuinely choose and are genuinely responsible. This is not a contradiction in Islam — it is the lived tension at the heart of what it means to be human before God.
“Indeed, all things We created with predestination.”
“Indeed, all things We created with predestination.”
A Muslim lives between two truths simultaneously: God has written my story — and — I am responsible for my choices. Both are true. Neither cancels the other.

The four components of Qadar
Islamic theology defines Qadar through four elements. Missing any one of them distorts the belief entirely.
God knows everything — what has happened, what is happening, what will happen, and what could have happened but didn't. His knowledge has no beginning, no limit, and is never updated.
“And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him.”
Knowing what someone will choose is not the same as forcing that choice. A teacher who knows a student will fail the exam did not cause the failure.
Everything that will occur was recorded in al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ, the Preserved Tablet, before creation began. Nothing is added after the fact. Nothing catches God off guard.
“No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being.”
This does not make your actions meaningless. It means they were known, not that they were forced.
Nothing comes into existence unless God permits it. But His will operates with wisdom, not randomness. He allows human beings to choose, even when they choose wrongly, because genuine choice is part of the test.
“And you do not will except that Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.”
Allah’s will includes allowing humans to choose — even when they choose wrongly.
God creates everything, including human actions. He is the source of all existence. But creating the capacity for a choice is not the same as making the choice. You decide. He brings it into being. The responsibility remains yours.
“Allah created you and what you do.”
Actions are chosen by humans, then created by God. Responsibility remains.
Why is Qadar a comfort?
Qadar becomes most important not in success, but in pain.
What reaches you was not handed down by a blind universe. It was decreed by a God who knows your name, your limits, and your grief. Nothing about your life is a statistic.
Nothing that happens to you is random — including what hurts the most. Pain is not punishment. Loss is not abandonment. There is a reason you may only understand later — or in the next life.
“Perhaps you dislike a thing while it is good for you.”
“Perhaps you dislike a thing while it is good for you.”
Qadar is not an invitation to stop trying. The Prophet ﷺ tied his camel and then trusted God. Effort is worship. So is trust. You hold both.
You will never be held accountable for what was beyond your control. Only for what you genuinely chose and what you were capable of bearing. God does not set traps — He sets tests, and He knows exactly what each soul can handle.
If God already knows — are my choices real?
Yes. Islam does not resolve this tension by removing one side. It holds both.
You genuinely choose — to obey or disobey, to forgive or hold a grudge, to seek God or walk away.
You are rewarded and held accountable for what you chose
You will be questioned about what you could have done differently“
“Allah does not charge a soul except with that within its capacity. — Qur’an 2:286
God already knew every step you would take before you were born
Your decisions never surprise Him — they are part of a wider plan
He allowed your path for reasons you may only understand later“
His knowledge of your choice is not the same as forcing it“
“No misfortune can happen, either in the earth or in yourselves, that was not set down in writing before We brought it into being— that is easy for God”
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
What a Muslim believes?
A Muslim lives with four truths held together:
God knows everything I will ever do. It is written. It unfolds within His will. He creates all things, including my actions. And yet I choose, and I am accountable for what I chose. Divine decree never means "you are forced to sin." It never means "you are punished for what you cannot bear." It means God knows and allows all things, but you are only answerable for what you genuinely decided.

God already knows everything, past, present, and future; what is seen and unseen. His knowledge is not discovered or updated. It has no beginning or end.
“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
God's Writing
What will happen is written in a divine record, al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ, the Preserved Tablet, before creation. Nothing is added after the fact.
“Indeed, all things We created with predestination.”

God's Will
Nothing comes into existence unless God allows it. Yet He wills with wisdom — not randomly. His will includes allowing human beings to choose, even when they choose wrongly.
“And you do not will except that Allah wills.”

God's Creation
God is the One who brings everything into existence and sustains it at every moment. Every created thing, including human actions, ultimately depends on Him.
Shared ground: what many Christians already believe
If you come from a Christian background, much of this may sound familiar.
If you come from a Christian background, much of this may sound familiar. The Bible speaks directly about God’s foreknowledge, His sovereign plan, and the reality of human choice — holding the same tension that Islam holds, without resolving it by removing either side.
“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
God’s knowledge of your days before you were born — the same conviction that sits at the heart of Qadar.
“I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life — so that you and your children may live.”
“I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life — so that you and your children may live.”
Scripture does not dissolve human freedom in God’s sovereignty. It holds both. Islam holds both in exactly the same way.
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
Human planning is real — and so is God’s sovereignty over the outcome. Islam affirms both without dissolving either side.
“In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.”
“In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.”
Predestination within God’s sovereign will — a belief Islam shares, while fully affirming that human accountability remains real.
