Oneness of God (Tawhid)
The heart of Islam: one Creator, one purpose, one path back to Him
Deep down, many feel there is only one true Creator behind everything. Islam gives this truth a clear form: Tawhid, the absolute oneness of God.
TAWHID CHANGES EVERYTHING
Who deserves my ultimate love, trust, and worship?
If there are many competing "gods", your heart is pulled in many directions. Islam invites you to something cleaner and more beautiful: one God over everything, no partners, no rivals, no confusion.
Allah says in the Quran:
"Your God is only One God. There is no god [worthy of worship] except Him — the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful."
The Bible carries the same call in the famous Shema:
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one."
Jesus repeats this in the Gospel:
"The most important [commandment] is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one."
What does Tawhid mean?
Tawhid is the belief that God is absolutely one, unique, and without equal. It is the foundation of Islam and the message carried by every prophet. Tawhid can be understood through three concepts that help clarify what it means to truly recognize and worship God alone.
Oneness in Lordship
God alone created, sustains, and controls the universe
Oneness in Worship
Only He deserves prayers, ultimate love, fear, and trust
Oneness in Names and Attributes
His qualities (like perfect mercy, perfect knowledge) are unique and unlimited
Everything you rely on, your heartbeat, the sun, your next breath, is held by the same One.
These verses summarize the foundation of Tawhid in the clearest possible way: God is one, unique, and without equal. Everything in existence depends on Him alone, while He depends on nothing, has no parents, no children, no partners, and no equal.
"Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal and Self Sufficient. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him."
"قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ١ اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ ٢ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ٣ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ"
"Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal and Self Sufficient. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him."
"قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ١ اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ ٢ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ٣ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ"

God is beyond limitations, yet close to you.
God is completely unique and unlike anything in creation. He is not limited by human weakness, physical form, time, or need. He was not born, does not give birth, and nothing can be compared to Him. Yet, He is near to His creation, hears every prayer, and knows what is within every heart.
Tawhid frees the believer from elevating created things into objects of worship or devotion. Ultimate dependence, love, and worship belong to God alone.
لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَىْءٌ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ ١١
"There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing."
Tawhid and the message of the Bible
Every prophet taught people to worship God alone. This message can still be seen throughout earlier scriptures, where God is described as one, unique, and worthy of worship without equals or partners
When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, he repeated the declaration of God’s oneness found in Deuteronomy.
Tawhid is the restoration of this pure and original monotheism.

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One.”

“The most important commandment,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One.’”

“The most important commandment,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One.’”

You can turn to God directly
One of the most personal aspects of Tawhid is that there is nothing standing between you and God. In Islam, there is no ordained priesthood with exclusive access to forgiveness, mercy, or prayer. Every person can call upon God directly, speak to Him honestly, and seek His forgiveness without needing someone to confess to.
وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ
“And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me.”
Tawhid is not only belief in one God, but a direct relationship with the Creator built on worship, reliance, prayer, and trust.
