Nûh

إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ أَنْ أَنذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ١

Surely, We sent Nuh (Noah) to his people: ‘Warn your people before a painful torment comes upon them.’

قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ ٢

He said: ‘O my people! Indeed, I am a clear Warner to you,

أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ ٣

That you must worship Allah and fear Him and obey me.

يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ اللَّهِ إِذَا جَاءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُ ۖ لَوْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ ٤

He will forgive your sins and will give you respite till an appointed term. Surely, when (the appointed) time of Allah comes, then respite is not given if only you knew.’

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِي لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا ٥

Nuh (Noah) submitted: ‘O my Lord! Indeed, I kept calling my people night and day,

فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَائِي إِلَّا فِرَارًا ٦

But my calling did no good except making them flee away.

وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِمْ وَاسْتَغْشَوْا ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا ٧

And every time I called them (towards faith) so that You might forgive them, they only thrust their fingers into their ears and wrapped their clothes over themselves and stuck obstinately (to disbelief) and behaved most arrogantly.

ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًا ٨

Then I called them aloud.

ثُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْلَنتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًا ٩

Then I advised them publicly and privately and secretly (as well).

فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا ١٠

Then I said: ‘Seek forgiveness from your Lord. Surely, He is Most Forgiving.

يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا ١١

He will send down on you torrents of rain,

وَيُمْدِدْكُم بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَارًا ١٢

And will help you with wealth and sons and will grow for you gardens and will make streams flow for you.

مَّا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًا ١٣

What is the matter with you that you do not have faith in, or the gnosis of, Allah’s Majesty,

وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا ١٤

Whereas He has created you through diverse conditions?

أَلَمْ تَرَوْا كَيْفَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَاوَاتٍ طِبَاقًا ١٥

Have you not seen how Allah has created seven (or many) heavenly spheres corresponding to one another (layer upon layer)?

وَجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا ١٦

And He brightened in them the moon and made the sun a radiant lamp (i.e., the source of light and heat).

وَاللَّهُ أَنبَتَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ نَبَاتًا ١٧

And Allah has caused you to grow like vegetation from the earth.

ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًا ١٨

Then He will return you into the same (earth) and will then bring you forth (from the same again).

وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًا ١٩

And Allah has made the earth a vast expanse for you,

لِّتَسْلُكُوا مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًا ٢٠

So that you may move around through its broad ways.’
