Al-Qiyâmah

لَا أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ١

I swear by the Day of Resurrection.

وَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ ٢

And I swear by the blaming self, reproaching (itself for evil deeds).

أَيَحْسَبُ الْإِنسَانُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُ ٣

Does man think We shall not at all collect his bones (which will decompose into dust particles after his death)?

بَلَىٰ قَادِرِينَ عَلَىٰ أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ ٤

Yes, of course! We have also the power to restore and set right even his finger joints and finger tips.

بَلْ يُرِيدُ الْإِنسَانُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُ ٥

Yet man still wants to continue committing sins also (in the life to come).

يَسْأَلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ ٦

He asks (scornfully): ‘When is the Day of Resurrection?’

فَإِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُ ٧

But when the eyes will be dazzled,

وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُ ٨

And the moon will be eclipsed,

وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ٩

And the sun and the moon will be fused (i.e., darkened) together,

يَقُولُ الْإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ ١٠

On that Day man will cry out: ‘Where to flee away?’

كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ ١١

No indeed! There is no place of refuge.

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ ١٢

The place of refuge and repose that Day will be with your Lord alone.

يُنَبَّأُ الْإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ ١٣

That Day man will be informed of those (deeds) which he sent forward and those (repercussions) which he left behind (after his death).

بَلِ الْإِنسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ ١٤

In truth, man will (himself) be aware of (the affairs of) his self,

وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُ ١٥

Even though he will offer all his excuses.

لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِ ١٦

(O Beloved!) Do not move your tongue in a hurry (to learn the Qur’an by heart when it is revealed to you).

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُ وَقُرْآنَهُ ١٧

Assuredly, upon Us rests its collection and preservation (in your breast) and its recitation (by your tongue).

فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَاهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْآنَهُ ١٨

So when We complete its recitation (by the tongue of Jibril [Gabriel]), then follow that recitation.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُ ١٩

Then surely upon Us is the clear exposition (of its implications).

كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ ٢٠

The truth is, (O disbelievers,) that you love (the world) which you can readily gain.
