فَتَرَى الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ يُسَارِعُونَ فِيهِمْ يَقُولُونَ نَخْشَىٰ أَن تُصِيبَنَا دَائِرَةٌ ۚ فَعَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَأْتِيَ بِالْفَتْحِ أَوْ أَمْرٍ مِّنْ عِندِهِ فَيُصْبِحُوا عَلَىٰ مَا أَسَرُّوا فِي أَنفُسِهِمْ نَادِمِينَ ٥٢
Fatara allatheena fee quloobihim maradun yusariAAoona feehim yaqooloona nakhsha an tuseebana dairatun faAAasa Allahu an yatiya bialfathi aw amrin min AAindihi fayusbihoo AAala ma asarroo fee anfusihim nadimeena
So you will see those whose hearts are diseased (with hypocrisy and minds infected with slavery) that they run to (join the Jews and the Christians and) say: ‘We fear lest the wheel of fate should turn against us (i.e., it is likely to get under the security umbrella by allying with them).’ But it is not far from possible that Allah (really) blesses (the Muslims) with victory or may (send) from His side a decree (as a sign of success and victory). Then they will feel ashamed of (the hypocritical thinking) they have concealed in their hearts. (5:52)
