‘Abasa

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ١

A feeling of uneasiness came upon his (holy) face, and he turned aside his (radiant) face,

أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ ٢

Because a blind man approached him (who interrupted his discourse).

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ ٣

And what do you know? Perhaps he would be purified (further owing to your attending to him),

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ ٤

Or would accept (your) advice which would provide him benefit (more and more).

أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ ٥

But the one who disregards (the Din ,

فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ ٦

You administer greater care (for his acceptance of Islam),

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ٧

Whereas there is no (burden of) responsibility on you, even if he does not adopt purification (i.e., faith).

وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ ٨

And as for him who has (himself) come to you exerting (in pursuit of piousness),

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ ٩

And he fears (his Lord) as well,

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ١٠

But you are not focusing your attention on him.

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ ١١

(O My Esteemed Beloved!) Not so indeed! These (Verses of the Holy Qur’an) are but advice.

فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ ١٢

The one who seeks may accept it (and learn by heart).

فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ ١٣

(They are inscribed) on venerable and revered pages,

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ ١٤

Which are exalted (and) purified,

بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ ١٥

(Have come forth) by the hands of emissaries (and scribes),

كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ ١٦

Who are possessors of eminence (and) embodiments of obedience.

قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ ١٧

Be cursed (the disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is!

مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ ١٨

From what stuff has Allah created him?

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ ١٩

He created him from a sperm drop, then determined his measure along with that (regarding genes and sex),

ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ ٢٠

Then (after structuring, developing and completing it) eased for him the passage (of delivery from the mother’s womb),
