Al-‘Alaq

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ ١

Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth,

خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ ٢

Createth man from a clot.

اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ ٣

Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous,

الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ ٤

Who teacheth by the pen,

عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ ٥

Teacheth man that which he knew not.

كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَىٰ ٦

Nay, but verily man is rebellious

أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ ٧

That he thinketh himself independent!

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَىٰ ٨

Lo! unto thy Lord is the return.

أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَىٰ ٩

Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰ ١٠

A slave when he prayeth ?

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ ١١

Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَىٰ ١٢

Or enjoineth piety ?

أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ١٣

Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah’s guidance) and is froward ?

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ ١٤

Is he then unaware that Allah seeth ?

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ ١٥

Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -

نَاصِيَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ ١٦

The lying, sinful forelock -

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُ ١٧

Then let him call upon his henchmen!

سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ ١٨

We will call the guards of hell.

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِب ۩ ١٩

Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).
